Looking for Wisdom

Have you ever needed to know how to do something and prayed — literally, desperately prayed — for God to show you how to do it?

My last job before retirement was as a software tester. Going into that job my experience was technical writing. What I learned, though, was software testing and technical writing are so closely related that if you have mastered one, the other will come relatively easy.

I went into that last job as a temporary employee. I had no clue what I was doing or what I should do. Each day I picked up a little more through following pre-written scripts and observation.

Going in, I knew nothing about testing processes, designing test case scenarios or performing thorough testing to identify defects. I just happened to be good at breaking things.

I was familiar with preparing comprehensive documentation because of my technical writing background. Even so, I was not a technical person. I was a computer software end user, but not in a technical sort of way.

Are you confused yet?

Those early days were total confusion for me. There were a number of times as a software tester that I had absolutely no idea if I was doing it right or how the tests were going to end up.

I remember sitting at my desk, near tears, praying for God to show me what I needed to do.

The coolest thing was, He either showed me through repetition of attempting to do it, or through someone else guiding me.

If you know me, you also know I am not very good at asking for help. I will bang my head against the wall trying to figure something out before I will ask for help.

That being said, I truly do believe that wisdom comes from God.

I have to ask myself why seeking His wisdom is sometimes my last resort. (Yes, I’m sitting here shaking my head.)

He tells us this in His Word:

“For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.”  Proverbs 2:6 (KJV)

If you are looking for wisdom, the Lord has it, and the Lord is willing to give it. Both Godly and earthly wisdom and knowledge come from Him.

That can be more challenging than it sounds sometimes because it does not always come easy. Sometimes there is a process — a consistent, deliberate effort.

If we are seeking Godly wisdom, we should also include prayer and spending time in His Word in that process.

Responding to this scripture and applying its principles to our lives could mean that we first understand that all wisdom, yes, all wisdom, comes from God. He did create the universe, after all. I’m thinking He has that wisdom and knowledge thing pretty well wrapped up.

As for me, my faith in God is encouraged as He gives me the gift of wisdom and knowledge when I am seeking it.

The knowledge of God and His wisdom is out there within reach. He wants us to obtain it.

What we have to do is seek it, truly seek it as we seek Him, and He will give it to us!

Lord — Wisdom – Wow!  I can praise You, for the times You have given me, wisdom and knowledge when I needed it. Help me live out my days seeking Your guidance for my daily walk.  As I explore Your Word, give me treasures that I can use to glorify You through wisdom, faithfulness, integrity, and honor.
