Looking Back at That Kitchen Chair

I sat in that 1960s aluminum kitchen dinette chair, faking bravery. My ears were about to be pierced! I was certain it was going to hurt, but I completely trusted the one holding the needle. Yes! Holding the needle!

I wasn’t the first to sit in that chair. By the time it was my turn, the woman holding the needle had already practiced on quite a few ear lobes. Her piercing tool of choice was a long, medium sized, very sharp, sewing needle.

I had been told by some that if I froze the ear lobe it would hurt less.  So, we sat and sat…and sat while the ice cube was doing its thing. I was finally told that enough was enough and we were moving on.

Let me just say, “The freezing did not work.”  It was horribly painful…to a nine-year-old anyhow. In fact, the frozen earlobe made it harder for the needle to pass through. I was informed that we were just going with it for the second ear.  I must admit, it hurt much less, and it was faster and was easier for the needle to slide through.

Back in the day there were no piercing studios in rural Appalachia. What we had in our little community was a reliable woman who knew how and wasn’t afraid to do it. That fearless woman would have been my mom. I can’t even count the number of women throughout the late 60s and early 70s who sat in her kitchen in that dinette chair and let her poke their ears with that very same needle.

They trusted her

If you were around at that time, you could understand why. She had lived among them long enough for them to see the kind of woman she was. She earned that trust by the way she lived her life.

Trust, especially in our world today, is a precious thing, with the most precious being found in the Lord. We can conquer many fears by facing them with that knowledge.

David understood what it meant to trust the Lord through difficult circumstances. In Psalm 9, he offers thanksgiving for God’s righteous judgment and His faithfulness to those who seek Him.

“ And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, Lord, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.”  Psalm 9:10 KJV

If you have been with me for a little while, you will know that yes, I’ve been through a few things over the years. But more important than any of that, I hope you’ve seen that my God has been with me every step of the way. I gladly confess that truth.

I hope that you that same faith.  It will carry you through!
