Seeing the Strength of the Rock

Troublesome days are going to come into our lives. It is part of living on this big ole rock called earth. Rocks…there are rocks out there that can break you; yet there are others that can uphold and protect you. Sometimes our choices determine the outcome.

Three locations come to my mind when I think about the safety and security of rocks. There is an enormous rock formation at the top of the mountain behind my house. There is a very large, solid rock at my favorite lake spot. Then, I remember a large flat rock in an area of the creek where I grew up that was called the slick rocks.

The formation jutting out at the top of the mountain behind my house is referred to as “the rock.” Standing on that rock feels secure. I tend to stand back near the center of the rock, where it is firmly attached to the mountain. You are not going to find me tiptoeing out to the edge, peering over the cliff side.

The rock at the camp is a huge, solid stone that juts out into the air far above the lake’s surface. Some like to jump off the safety of the rock into the lake below. I prefer to sit back in the solid center of the rock and enjoy the sunshine. No jumping for me!

The big flat rock in the creek at the slick rocks was different. I had to make sure my footing was firmly planted on the rock. My feet had to be stabilized through the slippery substances. Once I had my footing, I was in a solid position.

Rocks can be solid and steady, although not all rocks are trustworthy. We can stumble upon rocks that are haphazardly piled up on top of each other, or rocks that are covered with slippery substances. The wrong footing on these can bring trouble. We have to seek to discern the difference.

Thinking about those rocks reminds me that the same is true in life. Not everything that looks solid truly is.

Ah, but there is a Rock that we can confidently place our trust in. It is a secure, safe place, a solid foundation. It provides unfailing strength, protection and rescue.

This Rock is our Lord, our God.

Holding this truth deep in my heart — even with limited sight — helps me greet the dawning of each day with assurance. I trust that He will be the unmoving surface beneath my feet when my world begins to quake.

“The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.”  Psalm 18:2 (KJV)

Lean into each day with the sure knowledge that you rest on the solid Rock.
