There was that one day that I was a cool chick, well, an older cool chick. I am pretty much a “middle of the road, quiet, steady, girlie” rather than a cool chick most of the time. But at least I recognize that. I try not to pretend or put on airs, which makes “cool chick” days rare.
But before the “cool chick” day, there were many normal, relatively boring ones. Shoot! I even carried an ugly, boring mustard colored tote bag to work every day — until I didn’t.
On lunch break one afternoon, I was checking out a new store. I saw this really cute lilac and gray camo backpack. I did not hesitate. I snapped it up and replaced the ugly mustard colored tote bag.
I had been carrying this new backpack for a couple of months. I normally tossed it in the extra chair by the door. I was sitting at my desk working one morning, I heard a young man’s voice outside the door say, “Hey, I didn’t know you were that cool. Who would’ve thought you’d have a skull backpack?”
Wait? What? Who? Me?
I looked at the backpack, and there, where previously I’d seen intertwining splashes of lilac and varying shades of gray creating a pleasant camo design, there were obviously, very obviously, a mix of skulls in lilac and varying shades of gray that were intertwined to resemble camo.
I didn’t see it at all when I bought it, but once I saw it, I could not unsee see it.
I believe there are times in our lives when we see things differently than what they really are. When someone consistently presents one version of themselves and then, in a single moment, reveals something entirely different, you cannot unsee it. You may try to look over it or look around it. But I think, somewhere in your vision, you are always gonna see those skulls standing out on that backpack.
The backpack was harmless and even a little funny. But in people, mismatches between the outside and the inside are sometimes not so lighthearted.
God’s Word speaks directly to that. It is when you see the heart of a person that you see their true self. We don’t always see past the exterior that has been presented to us. Maybe we should look a little closer when we see someone’s outer shell start to morph into something untrue.
“Like water reflects a face, so a man’s heart reflects the man.” (Proverbs 27:19 — World English Bible)
“But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7 — King James Version)
Let the visible part of you match your heart, and let your heart reflect Christ.
P. S. Yes, I did keep the skull backpack!
