Looking Lovingly on Your Word

This post’s passage reference: Psalm 119:25-29.

Do you have a favorite book or series of books that you enjoy enough to read them over and over. I don’t so much read books any more as much as I listen to them. I have a subscription to the Library for the Blind and they have most any book I want to listen to. Mom and I had three series’ of books that we listened to multiple times. Our favorite was The Mitford Series by Jan Karon.

I can’t even tell you how many times we listened to The Mitford Series. We knew the characters. We talked like them. We told their corny jokes. We knew their lives and we knew the values that were being presented. I guess you can say they changed our lives. We became a little more Appalachian than we already were.

King David had a (sort of) Book that changed the way he lived. It was God’s Word,

We are headed on through Psalm 119. When we come to Psalm 119:25-29, we first see where David has been.  His prayer, his cry, was over the debris of the ashes that were round about him. He had led a hard life and had past sin that anguished him.  The powdery ashes clung to every part of his being. He prayed to be revived and restored according to God’s Word.

As he looked within himself, he told the Lord, of his shortcomings and his sins. He confessed before the Lord.  His desire was to be taught and learn God’s Ways. He had lived through enough to want to be diligent in observing God’s Laws. He wanted to learn them so he would be able to tell others and help them understand them…so they could avoid the same mistakes he had made.

The emotions of his heart were poured out as tears. Please, Lord, please, he petitioned, strengthen me, as it would be according to Your Word. He asked to be drawn so close to God that he would not think of using untruths or even half truths to make his way, as he had been guilty of before. He pleaded for God to be gracious to him and bestow on him—write it on his heart—His Law.

That sounds like a pretty powerful Book!

The challenge for us within this passage could be to truly grasp what the Word of God is. It is definitely more than a best selling book. It was important  enough for King David to have his own personal copy, that he had transcribed with his own hand. He studied it. He knew it. It was his life and he wanted it also inscribed on his heart to control every action of his life. That is our challenge, to see the value of God’s Word to change our lives.

How can we apply this to our lives? We can take the Word of God into our hearts and study it until we gain understanding a little bit at a time.  “The full thought is, If we are to be kept from sin, it must be by the grace of God exercised through the teaching of his Word.” (James Boice) The teaching of His Word can only come from the study of His Word.

What does this mean to my Faith? My Faith is strengthened each time I study God’s Word and He gives me something back. I may be elementary in my study methods and what I am receiving and putting out, but each time I get a little something back, I see it as smile and a nod of the head from God for my effort.

Lord, thank You for this precious Gift that is Your Word. It is so much more than a book. It is my most valuable possession on this journey through life. I thank You for telling me that I am enough when I feel flawed, for showing me my beauty when I feel unlovely, for showing me how rich I am when I feel poor; but mostly for showing me that I am valuable to You because You created me and You love me! Oh how I love to look on Your Word!
