Watch the Living Water Rain Down

This week I started going through the “Lord’s Prayer — The Lord’s Requirements” reading plan from the YouVersion Bible App with my cousin. The devotion this morning, “Day 4 – Which Heaven,” caught my eye. In it they referenced Isaiah 55:10. This devotion was talking about the questions of,  “Where is heaven? What is heaven? Is it a place, or another dimension of life?” My mind got stuck on that verse for another reason.

This passage sent me down a different path today…

Isaiah 55:10—“…as the rain and the snow come down from Heaven and do not return to it without watering the earth….

In looking at the verse in context with the other verses surrounding it, the Bible tells us that the heavens are higher than the earth and they always will be. We know this because the Bible says that as long as it is so (the heavens being higher than the earth,) the way God does things and the way He thinks about things will be higher than ours—which means they will always be higher than ours.

The rain and the snow both fall down from Heaven, and I kind of think the snow is just the frozen form of rain. They do not fall back up. Instead they fall to the ground and cause the ground to be made useful for growing plants, bushes and trees to provide food for the farmer that tills the ground. They cause people to be able to harvest the grain and make it into bread that the farmer can eat and then send back praises to God for His provision.

And God’s Word, when He speaks it,  shall never return to Him without the effect He intends. His Word will accomplish the actions that He sets forth. Not only shall it accomplish His willed actions, it will prosper them.

So what I related this passage to symbolically is Jesus.  Jesus came down from the heavens like the rain. He provided the Living Water that waters our souls and allows them to grow, flourish, and be fed, and then causes us to praise God for His provision.  And then He went back to the Father.  He completed that same cycle that Isaiah 55:10 presents.  The full cycle of God’s  intended action, Jesus’ sacrifice for our sins, was completed.

The challenge of this passage could be to never doubt that God will do what He has said.  Scripture tells us that His Word will never return void, which Strong’s defines as  emptily; figuratively (objective) ineffectually, (subjective) undeservedly:—without cause, empty, in vain, void. So that means the things God can accomplish through His Word, through us will be effective, complete, effective, suitable, powerful, abounding, profitable and abundant! And the results of our obedience can be a sweet sound of praise going back to Him. In addition, it can be a challenge for some to not get ahead of God by thinking that they know what He is going to do or they know better than He does. Pray for discernment to be able to listen for God’s voice.

We can apply this passage to our lives by continually seeking God and allowing Him to use us to tell others about His Son, Jesus.  God likes it when we use His Word to tell others about Him. When doubts creep in, always remember that what ever God plans to accomplish will be accomplished. The thing is, we will receive blessings if we allow Him to accomplish it through us.

What does this mean to my Faith? It means that I have every assurance that God’s Word is something I can always count on.  God is the One I can always count on.  I can cling to the promise that the things God has promised me will come to pass. First and foremost, my salvation, that was part of God’s plan, is intact throughout eternity!

I praise You, God,  that Your ways are higher and better than my ways.  You do things the right way.  I would make a real mess out of things if I were in charge.  I thank You for the plan of salvation and that I am part of Your family now. I am looking forward to the day that I will get to meet my Savior face to face and bow at His feet. Until then, please continue to send the Living Water of Your Words.

9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. 10 For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: 11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.”   Isaiah 55:9-11 (KJV)

Then shall he give the rain of thy seed, that thou shalt sow the ground withal; and bread of the increase of the earth, and it shall be fat and plenteous: in that day shall thy cattle feed in large pastures.”  Isaiah 30:23 (KJV)

For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth; so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations.” Isaiah 61:11 (KJV)

My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass:”  Deuteronomy 32:2 (KJV)

Thou visitest the earth, and waterest it: thou greatly enrichest it with the river of God, which is full of water: thou preparest them corn, when thou hast so provided for it.”  Psalm 65:9-10 (KJV)

6 He shall come down like rain upon the mown grass: as showers that water the earth. 7 In his days shall the righteous flourish; and abundance of peace so long as the moon endureth.”  Psalm 72:6,7 (KJV)

Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the Lord, till he come and rain righteousness upon you.”  Hosea 10:12 (KJV)
