Look for the Correct Door

My momma told me recently that she wanted me to paint our front door purple.  Over the past few years we have gone through the white door, the black door and the (current) red door phases. I am not sure where she came up with a purple door. Is that a thing now? Am I going to have to move quick to beat the neighbors and have the first purple door on the the street? I think there would be one thing about it, if I did paint it purple we could always say, “Look for the white house with the purple door.” Choosing the correct door is important in general, but choosing the correct door to eternity has an unchangeable consequence.

In John 10:7, Jesus referred to Himself as the Door of the Sheep.

“Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep.” John 10:7. (KJV)

Jesus frequently repeated Himself when the subject was vitally important. In this passage, here we have Him emphasizing a point again.  Ah, but not just again, but a, “Verily, Verily” again. Jesus really wanted to get their attention.   Listen already!  Jesus was speaking as from Himself. He was not passing along something He had learned from the religious community.  This was from God to man.

The culture of Jesus’ day understood the sheep door (or gate). They knew that the safest place for the sheep to be was through the door into the protected area and a protected door (gate). Jesus was telling them—that for them (and for us)—He was that door that led to safety and security.

Me, myself. I like safety and security when it comes to my eternal future. That is why I have chosen the Door that is Jesus Christ, the Living Son of God.

For Christ followers, the challenge here is to make sure we are using the correct Door! If we continually keep our eyes on Christ, we will be able to keep our eyes on the correct Door.  To make use of the Door, we must first understand and believe and accept who Jesus is. Once we accept, we must stay on the path that leads to the correct Door.

This scripture (John 10:7.) strengthens my faith because Jesus said this about Himself.  I believe in the truth of His words.  I can count on safety and eternity through that Door.

I actually did have a couple of questions that popped up after I finished this initial verse map.

  • How did paths lead to certain doors in the time of Jesus?
  • Did the shepherds deviate from a regular route or did they follow the same paths all the time?

These were just some things I thought about as I was finishing up relating to getting to the correct door and staying on the right path.

Lord Jesus, I thank You for being with me on this uneven path that I am currently traveling. The emotional ups and downs right now would be unbearable without Your presence. Help me to keep my feet on the path and my eyes on the Door so that the correct door opens for me into eternity.

Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep.”  John 10:7 (KJV)

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.”  John 10:1. (KJV)

I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.”  John 10:9  (KJV)

Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;”  Hebrews 10:19-20. (KJV)

What is your relationship to the all-knowing God of the universe?  Do you know Jesus, the only Door that will allow you into eternity with God? Do you know the peace that can come only from an intimate relationship with Him?  You can know Him.  Jesus Christ, God’s Son, born into human flesh, sinless, crucified and giving His life freely, buried, arisen on the third day, will come into your life and change the outcome of your eternity.  You just have to be willing to believe and accept His truth.

  1. The sheep gate was guarded sometimes by the shepherd that lay in front of the door so he could keep the sheep safe and inside. Oh, that we can be safe and inside always.
