Do you have a passage in the Bible that is your go-to for when you need to pull close to God? Because the fact is, we pull away from God. He never pulls away from us. He is always there. We ever so often take our own paths though. We put our eyes on something else and take them off God.
I have that go-to passage. I could never recount the number of times I have spoken the words contained within it. It is one of the passages that are called the Psalms of Ascent. (Look them up. There is an interesting history around them.) Psalm 121 is my go to passage. This is my paraphrase of it and how I see it:
When I look up and around to the awesomeness of the mountains, I have no doubt where my help comes from.
My help comes from my amazing Lord! This is the Lord that created those mountains as he was creating the whole heavens and earth.
My Lord guides my footsteps so that I will not waver off of the path. I can count on this at all times because my Lord does not sleep.
This, my Lord, is the Keeper of Israel. Not only does He not sleep, He does not even rest or nap.
Yes! The Lord is the One who keeps me going. He provides a protective shade over the right side of me.
The Lord’s protection is there for me day and night— when the sun is out in the sky and when the moon is lighting up the night.
The Lord’s protection will shield me from evil and preserve me.
Ah, my soul, My soul is preserved for eternity, because my soul will be with Him throughout eternity.
The Lord watches and preserves all of our steps—when we go out and when we come back in. From the very moment we become His servant all the way through eternity.
Challenge yourself to applying this passage to your life. Always remember how big your God is. Look around at the mountains (or the oceans, or the rivers, or any of God’s amazing creations) daily and see their awesomeness and realize that your Big God created them. Then remember in your heart that God will always be there for you, to lead you in the way you should go and away from trouble.
Another challenge is to make sure you deliberately stay on the right path. If you do, you can be confident that you will not stumble or fall. He will not allow you to fall. Because His eyes are always on you. You can rest because He does not, ever!
You can face challenging situations and put yourself out there knowing that your Lord is right by your side, like a superhero shadow. It does not matter if it is day or night; the lord is there to keep you from harm, to make absolutely sure that your soul is safe. This is for now and for always and forever and ever and ever through infinity!
This passage has a great deal of meaning to my faith. I memorized this passage as part of a Bible study, probably, over fifteen years ago. Then later when there were storms in every area of my life, within all my safe places, all at the same time, having hidden this passage in my heart was such a blessing. I held on to those promises. I whispered them again and again…and again. I knew that even though I was walking through the storm, my God was right there beside me.
Lord, help me to continually remember to keep my eyes on You. I love how You comfort me, equip me, love me and challenge me through Your Word. Help me through good times and bad times to always know You are good and You have the best plans laid out to strengthen, grow and protect my soul… for eternity.

“I will lift up my eyes to the hills—From whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord,
Who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel Shall neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your keeper; The Lord is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, Nor the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in From this time forth, and even forevermore.” Psalm 121 (NKJV)
