Contemplate the Priceless Gift

I have been seeing friends post Easter pictures from when they were children. Easter pictures from childhood are priceless — sometimes embarrassing or hilarious — but priceless still the same.

For Easter in the early sixties, the standard uniform for little girls was white frilly dresses lifted by crinolines, white gloves and pearls, with tights or white lacy socks. The ensemble was rounded out by the ever present black patent leather shoes.

Then… there was the hair. If you were one of the lucky ones, it was covered with a bonnet or a frilly white hat. For some of us, even that did not cover the carnage!

In my two most memorable childhood Easter photos, the hair is the first thing that jumps out at you.

In the 1963 Easter photo, as a three year old, I stood dressed in the standard “frilly dress uniform,” wearing tights. There was a ridiculously frilly bonnet covering my head. It just did not cover enough of my head. My mom had chopped my bangs almost up to the roots. The frilly bonnet only enhanced the barrenness of my forehead.

The next picture was when I was about eight years old. The dress was less frilly, still standard Easter fair though. The hairdo would have been a bouffant. It was probably not supposed to be flat or smooshed to one side. But by the time this afternoon picture had been taken, the hair had been slept in one night, gone through church, Easter dinner and multiple, sweaty Easter egg hunts.

I’m sure, just as the little girls of the sixties look back at those butchered bang pictures, the little girls of today will look at their Easter pictures fifty years from now and wonder what their moms were thinking.

The important thing I see when I look back at old Easter pictures, more than the fashion faux pas,      is that my parents took their little girl to church— to learn about Jesus. I remember playing in the toddler room at church. I learned to love Jesus from early childhood. They taught me to have reverence for this season we call Easter, especially resurrection Sunday.

This is the day where we, as Christ followers, celebrate the end of those three agonizing days, and rejoice in the resurrected Christ.

“3 And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments: 5 And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead. 6 He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,”  Luke 24:3-6 (KJV)

Wherever you are on your earthly journey, I pray that you can look back and find that your path has led you to the priceless gift of salvation.

What is your relationship to the all-knowing God of the universe? Do you know the peace that can come only from an intimate relationship with Jesus? You can know Him.  Jesus Christ—God’s Son, born into human flesh, sinless, crucified and giving His life freely, buried, arisen on the third day—will come into your life and change the outcome of your eternity. You just have to be willing to believe and accept His truth. In addition, here is an excellent page that can give you additional information on peace with God: PeaceWithGod.net.
