Seeing a picture of a Rottweiler today made me laugh. It brought back the memory of the time when my car was rocked by a Rottweiler and he bit off my side mirror. “My story” has always been that he bit my side mirror off. But I suppose if we are being truthful here, he did not really bite my side mirror off, but, he rocked my car pretty good, and he was the reason that it got ripped off.
I went out to start my car one frosty morning. I put the key in the slot to unlock the door and I heard something moving in the yard. I looked around and there was this HUGE Rottweiler running straight at me. After a second of sheer terror, I jumped in the car — barely before the dog got there.
The dog stood up on his hind legs and put his front paws on top of my car. The dog was taller than my car! It just stood there looking in the window at me. I was totally flabbergasted. I had no earthly idea what to do. I just knew beyond the shadow of a doubt that I was not stepping out of the car. I yelled at the dog to go away; but he stayed there with his big, pink tounge hanging out.
I started my car after sitting in the freezing cold trying to figure out what to do. I thought to just drive around the house and maybe he would go away. I started backing out of the curved driveway. In my frustration, I totally forgot about my brother’s truck parked to the side and behind me. I heard this nauseating crunch of tortured car flesh. Where I had not started the car, the windows were still frosty and I could not see the truck back there. My driver side mirror was hanging by the wires, I was terrified to look at my brother’s shiny new red truck, and I was in tears.
To make this long story short, come to find out, he was just a big puppy—a VERY BIG puppy! He belonged to the guy across the road. He really was harmless, just overly friendly. He was so big that he was terrifying. I honestly was afraid to get out of the car, because I didn’t know if he was a friendly dog or not. I did not know what that outcome would be. I did not know that he was more likely to waller me to the ground and lick me to death than harm me.
I was afraid though. I was seeing through the lens of fear. I was so focused on the fear that I forgot about what was surrounding me. I forgot that there were obstacles close to me that I needed to get around.
That is, how fear does us. We see the fear. We flinch. It causes us to lose focus of things around us. It causes us to make decisions, sometimes decisions that affect our lives negatively. But God has told us in His Word not to fear, not to be afraid. He assures us that he is with us at all times, making those obstacles around us seem less fearful. We need to lean into Him and allow Him to lead us during times of fear.
“Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the Lord thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee. And the Lord, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.” Deuteronomy 31:6,8 (KJV)
During times of fear, we can be assured that our faithful God will be with us.
