Happy Valentine’s Day y’all! Today is a quiet day for me. I personally think it is a good day to reflect on love. I am missing a big chunk of my heart on this particular Valentine’s Day. The sweet thing is that I am surrounded by family and friends that are trying hard to fill up what is missing. Having those close that care for you, or even care about you, can make significant days feel a little brighter.
The star of this day often seems to be romantic love. It does not own the holiday though. I have smiled as I have seen on social media the little kiddos taking their decorated valentine boxes to school. Family can be some of our favorite valentines. Going through some of my momma‘s things, I found a felt valentine that I had personally crafted for her, probably, forty years ago. She still had it in her little treasure box. Our friends are some of our best valentines—sometimes even more significant than family.
A love that did not include boxed greeting cards, candy, flowers, or jewelry came first. It included a sacrifice that was personally crafted just for us. The example from that love showed us what it really means. Jesus Christ gave his life to redeem us because of His great love. In Matthew 22:37-39 He shares two commands related to love.
“And he said to him, Thou shalt love [the] Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy understanding. This is [the] great and first commandment. And [the] second is like it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” Matthew 22:37-39
Valentine’s Day celebrates human love—but Jesus provided a love that never fails.
