Seeing God’s Table in a Different Light

I mentioned going to lunch with my “very old friend“ yesterday. As we sat there, a number of people came in and out of the restaurant that I knew. But for the most part, we were surrounded by strangers that were unknown. We sat there catching up for probably two and a half hours. We were talking so much that I don’t know how we even got time to eat! We did though, and it was delicious. We were sitting at a table that had been well prepared!

That scene played through a little differently in my mind as I was looking through a Bible study on Psalm 23 that I will be starting with friends next week. As I read through the Psalm in various translations, I saw verse five in a different light.

“You provide delicious food for me in the presence of my enemies. You have welcomed me as your guest; blessings overflow!”  Psalm 23:5 (Living Bible)

As I was reading the verse aloud, I read that God provides delicious food for me in the presence of my enemies. And the image of lunch yesterday became more like God’s blessing. I was seated. I was fed. I was surrounded by strangers. They were not enemies — just unknown. I was not in control of who was watching, who was listening, who was near, yet I felt safe enough to enjoy the moment. That feels like a table that God has prepared.

All I have to do at God’s table is sit, receive, and be nourished!
