I had a lunch date today with a very old friend. Well, I probably should not call her very old. Let’s just say that our friendship certainly has some age on it. Today’s spring like weather made it easy to get dressed for the day. I pulled a light sweater on over a tank top. It was the perfect combination to walk out into the light of a sunny day. Honestly, I did not put a lot of thought into what I was going to put on for the day, like I may have if it had been a formal occasion.
An earlier conversation got me thinking about how we choose what to put on our bodies on the outside each day. Then the thought turned to how we choose what to put on our spiritual bodies…what we put into our hearts. In Colossians 3:14, Paul tells us to “…clothe yourself in love…”
Yes, we have days when we wake up tired, stressed or grumpy. There are days when we wake up unsure about everything. We don’t know how the day is going to go, so we don’t really know how to prepare. Even with all of these scenarios, we should still, thoughtfully, put on love before we walk out the door.
In this Valentine season that celebrates love with cards and flowers, Scripture reminds us that love is something we choose daily.
“Even more than all this [Above all], clothe yourself in love, which ·holds you all together in perfect unity [or binds everything together; L is the bond of perfection/completeness].” Colossians 3:14 (Expanded Bible)
