What does your day and night look like? Can you tell them apart? Since I’ve been trying to get my schedule realigned from the past couple of years of just winging it, sometimes it is hard for me to see where the day ends and the night begins. To say my sleep schedule is out of whack would be an understatement. I’m a schedule girl. I need structure and order and organization. As a hospice caregiver, especially during those last four months, there was no schedule. There was no structure or order really. In our situation, I just had to do what needed to be done in the moment, and I slept with one ear open all the time.
I have always enjoyed beginning my mornings with devotion and prayer. I try to have a short quiet time each morning with a short devotional, prayer for friends and family, and sending texts to them to touch base for the day. This actually began before I retired. It was my early morning ritual. During the last couple of years, my early morning quiet time has changed into more of a mid morning or sometimes even late morning quiet time. This happened because I had to work my sleep around whatever needed to be done for the day.
I also like ending my day spending time with my Lord in some type of scripture study. I am involved in multiple Bible studies through Church. So these I will pick up anytime during the day or night and work on them a little bit at a time.
I am not quite back to the structure I desire, but I am trying to work back toward quiet mornings, long afternoons, and evenings where I’m tired enough to fall into bed for a good night’s sleep, while weaving God’s Word throughout my everyday life. If you read through the first chapter of Joshua, you will read how important it is to keep God’s Word close to your life.
As the book of Joshua begins, we see where the Lord’s servant, Moses, had died. It was at this time that God called Joshua, who had been Moses’ assistant. He told Joshua he was to lead the people into the land he had promised them. He reminded Joshua of all that he had promised through Moses. He urged them multiple times to not be afraid to do this.
Then in Joshua 1:8, we see where God commands them that the book of the Law of Moses should never depart from their mouths—they should never stop speaking about it.
He called on them to consistently meditate on it day and night, that if they would do this it would help them obey all that was written therein.
He urged them that to make their way prosperous they needed to meditate and obey the Law. If they did this. They would have success.
God has not changed. He still desires that we meditate on and obey his Word.
What is the challenge this verse poses for us? I think it is clear that our challenge in our nonstop, busy world is making the deliberate decision to study, meditate on, talk about and live out God’s Word.
Applying this verse to our lives could look like simply creating spaces within our lives to study, meditate, talk about and live out God’s Word.
My faith is strengthened in knowing that the more I immerse myself into God‘s word and study, meditate on and talk about it with others, God will honor this effort.
Thank You Lord for giving me guidance on the importance of staying in Your Word, hiding it in my mind and my heart and spending time talking about it to others. Help me seek to have Your Word become a steady companion through out ordinary and extraordinary moments, from the light of the day to the dark of the night
