The Treasure We Have Our Eyes On

I was reading through a writer’s book today. One of the sections of the book had different writing prompts. One of the writing prompts was, “What was the first thing you saved up your own money to buy?” I don’t think it would have been when I was a child, because there was probably only one thing I wanted that I would have had to save for and I would have not had that much money. It was a dream for me. It was a diamond princess ring just like my aunt had. Oh what a treasure that was in my eyes.

So I started thinking about what that first thing might have been, a substantial might have been.  Looking back, I had a car loan for my first car.  So there was no saving there. When it came down to it, it did end up being a princess ring. In my early twenties I found the dream princess ring I had always dreamed of. I saved and saved. I made extra money to add to the ring fund by selling some craft items. It took a while but I was finally able to slide that ring onto my finger. And yes, it was a special treasure to me.

In Matthew 6:19-21, Matthew shares Jesus’ message about storing up treasure from the sermon on the Mount.

Jesus told them that they should not amass or reserve treasures here on earth. The treasures that are saved here on earth can be destroyed in some way, some by moth and rust. There is also the chance that thieves can break in and steal earthly treasures.

Jesus then told them that they should, instead, store up treasures for themselves in Heaven. The treasures that are saved in Heaven cannot be destroyed by moth and or corroded by rust. And there are no strong men that can break in and steal treasures that are stored in Heaven.

He then stated that where someone’s treasure is, that is where their heart will be focused.

What is the challenge from this passage for those of us that follow Christ? We work hard at amassing treasures, but the challenge could be making sure the majority of our treasures are the kind that are stored in heaven, and that we are keeping our focus on Christ.

How can we apply this to our lives? The things that Jesus tells us are things that we should try to do. In this passage Jesus tells us that we should be doing things that would store up treasures in heaven. We should give Christ our whole heart and do the things that would promote God’s Kingdom.

My faith is strengthened knowing that God gives me a place to store up treasure where it cannot be damaged or lost or stolen…treasure that I hope to lay at the feet of Jesus when I make it home.

Lord, thank You for telling us the things we need to hear  for showing us the way to eternity. Help me continue to work, keeping my heart and my eyes on the treasure that matters.

“19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: 20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: 21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”  Matthew 6:19-21 (KJV)

I feel that since God has given me the gift of this platform, I must always tell you about my Jesus.

What is your relationship to the all-knowing God of the universe?  Do you know Jesus? Do you know the peace that can come only from an intimate relationship with Him?  You can know Him.  Jesus Christ, God’s Son, born into human flesh, sinless, crucified and giving His life freely, buried, arisen on the third day, will come into your life and change the outcome of your eternity.  You just have to be willing to believe and accept His truth.
