I have generally been accused of being a Pollyanna. I try to look at most things in a positive light. I am not a big talker, especially if I am around people that I do not know. In that instance, I tend to measure my words a little more closely. I find that when I take time to think about the situation I am in, and the effect my words will have, it helps me to attempt to tame my tongue. I am not always successful, but I hope I am successful more than I am not.
I have had a number of conversations recently where people have been speaking through anger, jealousy or misunderstanding. Within each of these conversations my spirit was affected negatively in a multitude of ways. Some things will never look the same for me because of words that did not need to be said. They were not hurtfully aimed at me, but they left a mark, nonetheless.
Proverbs is considered a book of wisdom. Although the book is addressed to a young man, anyone who is wise and who pays attention will benefit from this instruction. (1)
In Proverbs 13:3, Solomon instructs that the one who is careful with what he says, who watches what comes out of his mouth, will keep trouble from his life. In contrast, he shares that the one who speaks foolishly will be in danger of destruction for his life.
There is so much damage that can be done by those that are not able to control their tongues. James 3:6 refers to the tongue as being a flame of fire and a whole world of wickedness. It can truly corrupt your whole life.
What is the challenge here for followers of Christ, and really, for the world in general? Our world seems to be filled with people that have no filter on their tongues. The challenge for us is to be slow to speak and measure our words appropriately to the situation.
How can we apply this to our lives? The best way to apply this scripture to our lives is basically to be good to each other. When we have consideration for people around us we tend to watch our tongues a little closer. Guarding our words can prevent damage to relationships and keep situations from becoming strained.
My faith can be encouraged by knowing that God’s Word has provided instruction for all areas in my life. I just need to be willing to listen and follow the guidance that God gives.
Lord, I sincerely ask that You will guard my tongue and help me to measure my words. I don’t ever want to cause hurt because of something I have said. Please help the world to realize that we all need to tame our tongues.
