The Glimmer and Glow of True Treasure

We all have different opinions on what treasure is. Some treasure money. Some treasure their family or relationships. Some treasure experiences in their lives and time spent with friends. While others treasure possessions. I think we all have a few possessions that we treasure.

I have mentioned before in previous posts that some of my most cherished treasures are the Christmas ornaments that are on my Christmas tree. I call it the family Christmas tree because it has ornaments on it dating back to my parents first Christmas tree after they got married. Yes, there are some definite treasures there.

So this afternoon, as I was bending over to plug in the Christmas tree, I felt something crunch under my foot. I said (out loud,) “I hope that is something of mine and not something of Haley’s.” Since the only thing on that side were some presents for Haley and I that were dropped off by a friend yesterday. Well, it was not something of Haley‘s. It was most definitely something of mine. It was a Christmas ornament; but not just any Christmas ornament. It was one of those highly treasured ornaments that were on my mom and dad‘s first Christmas tree, and yes, it was broken pretty good.

The little red snowman house and the yellow ornament in the corner of the picture are two of those special ornaments. I’m afraid the yellow one in the corner did not make it past this afternoon.

It had already been a pretty emotional day, and I think that just about hit the tip of the iceberg. I picked up all the shattered pieces of the ornament and lay it on the table. Then, as I started looking at it, I saw that I might possibly be able to glue it back together. It won’t look the same, but how these special ornaments look has never been the main thing anyhow. It is the sentimentality behind them. So the plan for this particular treasure is to see if I can get it put back together and back on the tree where it belongs. I will keep you posted!

Yes, this little trinket is somewhat of a treasure in my eyes, but in Isaiah 33:5-6, Isaiah shared with God’s people what true treasure is.  He told about the awesomeness of the Lord who is exalted on high. He made known to them that the Lord has filled Zion with judgment and righteousness. The Israeli people would have been aware that Zion symbolically represented Jerusalem.

Isaiah told them that wisdom and knowledge will be the stability of their times and the strength of salvation. Those that feared the Lord, this would be their treasure. He gave them a lot to hang on to during some bleak times.

The challenge for us as we look at these verses could be for us to know where our treasure is. There are so many things out there that are attempting to get us to take our eyes off the True Treasure, our greatest treasure—the Lord

How can we apply these verses to our lives? We need to seek wisdom and hold knowledge as close as we can. Wisdom and knowledge are not the same thing. The more knowledge that we can acquire, the wiser we will become. We need to become wise enough to realize where our treasure lies and how to safely hold on to it.

How does this strengthen my faith? My faith is strengthened when I realize that the Lord is my strength. He will give me the wisdom that I need. He will give me stability in my life. Earthly treasures will have effects on my life while I am here, but I need to determine that my most valuable treasure is the One that can never be crushed. My treasure is the Lord.

Lord, thank you so much for being there and for being my salvation and my strength. Help me to strive to always have the realization that you are the greatest treasure of all and that the glimmer and glow of the treasures You give us mean more than anything earthly treasure.

5 The Lord is exalted; for he dwelleth on high: he hath filled Zion with judgment and righteousness. 6 And wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times, and strength of salvation: the fear of the Lord is his treasure.”   Isaiah 33:5-6 (KJV)
