The Treasure of Light

For a year or so my dad worked out of town. He worked about three or so hours away from where we lived during the week and came home on Friday evenings to spend the weekend.  One Friday evening when our dad had gotten home, he sent my brother and I out to get his bags out of the trunk of the car.

He did not think about what he and mom had stashed in the trunk of the car. We put our jackets on, grabbed the flashlight and went to grab dad’s bags. My brother popped the trunk and we beheld a treasure trove of Christmas wishes!

By the time we got back in the house with dad’s bags my mom was wearing him out for sending us to get them. It was not long before Christmas and we pretty much knew what “Santa was bringing.”  The surprise part was possibly a little tainted, but the Christmas joy was still there and the end result of the not so surprising Christmas treasures was still good.

Earthly treasures can be good; but earthly treasures are nothing compared to the treasures that God had in store for us. In 2 Corinthians 4:6-9, Paul was telling the Corinthians about the Light of Christ and how special heavenly treasure is.

We see that not only did God command that Light to shine out of the darkness, He shone it within our hearts so that in seeing the face of Jesus Christ, we might have knowledge of the glory of God.

Our bodies are just earthen vessels that are filled with treasure. The focus of this treasure is the greatness and power of God and should never be about us.

As receivers of this Light, it is true that we face troubles on every side, but yet we should not worried or confused. We are uncertain but we should not let despair take hold.  We are downtrodden and oppressed, but we should not feel destroyed!

The challenge for those following Christ from these verses could be keeping our earthen vessels in good repair so that we are able to receive such a treasure as the Light of Jesus Christ and carry it within.

How can we apply this to our lives. We should take the light that Christ shines within our lives and allow it to be seen by all the world. Even through struggles we should be willing to let the treasure of Christ’s Light shine through us.

What does this mean to my faith? My faith is strengthened each time I feel the Light of Christ shine into my life in different ways and through different experiences.

Lord, thank You for the treasure of Your Light. My best times are when You are refilling my earthen vessel with that treasure. Help me to be willing to share that light as a treasure for others.

6 For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. 8 We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; 9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed—“   2 Corinthians 4:6-9 (NKJV
