Growing up, we lived in a house that had a sun porch that went all the way across the front of the house. There were huge windows that ran the whole length of the sun porch. Every year at Christmas time, my dad would put bright colored Christmas lights in every pane of every window in the sunroom. People looked forward to my dad’s Christmas lights. It was a sight to see from the road. It lit up the whole area around the front of our house with light.
Years later, we lived in a little square cottage style house. My dad and brothers put up Christmas lights all around the outside of that little house. At night, it truly looked like a gingerbread house. There was plenty of light reflecting off that small house.
In John 12:45-47, Jesus was telling them that He is all the Light they (we) need. In verse 46, He was trying to explain that anyone that has seen Him has seen the One that sent Him—the Father.
Jesus was very clear here. He told them that He had come into the world as a Light that would light up the whole world. He urged them to understand and believe that if they would believe in Him they would dwell in the light not in darkness.
Jesus proclaimed that those who heard His message, His words, and yet did not believe His words, He would not be judgmental toward them. He wanted them to understand that this first coming was not about judgement. It was about salvation.
What is the challenge within this scripture for those of us that are following Christ? Our challenge could be to completely and totally accept the Light of Christ so that it shines out from within us to lead others to Christ.
How can we apply this to our lives? We should make sure that our face is turned toward Christ. That way, the light that comes from Christ will be reflected out of our lives for the world to see.
What does this mean to my faith? My faith is strengthened when I realize that no matter how dark my vision becomes, I am always living in perfect Light. It shines around me and hopefully shines through me.
Lord, thank You for the Light to live by, the Light to walk by, the Light that lights up my life. I pray that I will walk close enough to Christ to reflect His light all around.
