When Others Look at Me, Will They See That I Have Served Faithfully?

This post’s passage reference: Psalm 119:94-97

Thursday morning I had some letters ready to put in the mailbox. I put my little jacket on over top of my pajamas and headed down the hill toward the mailbox. Right before I got to the bottom of the hill, a little blue car turned into my driveway. As soon as I saw the car, I remembered that I was supposed to be ready to go to Bible study at that particular time. Well, obviously, since I was still in my jammies, I was definitely not going to Bible study.

My schedule has been so erratic for the past two years that I still do not have a regular routine—even after nearly two months. I’m trying to get on some kind of schedule, and get some structure back in my life, but it just isn’t coming yet. I told her that I was so sorry, I would definitely not be going but I would try and do better next week. I told her my problem is, a lot of days. I just don’t know what day it is.

I rarely look at the clock, and since I am not responsible for a barrage of doctor’s appointments any longer, I rarely look at the calendar. So truly, sometimes I don’t know what day it is. What my schedule looks like most days is prayer time and quiet time, then study time in the morning to research the scriptures that I’m going to write about that day. Then in the afternoon I’ll sometimes pick it back up. Then mostly in the evening is when I finish actually writing. So the most consistent thing that I’m doing with my days right now—which is not a bad thing—is talking to God and being in His Word.

We see in Psalm 119:94-97, that the psalmist was sort of in a similar place, except instead of getting to be in a safe warm home and relaxingly spend time with the Scriptures, he was generally fighting for his life, on the run—sometimes living in caves—and still spending time taking in  God’s precepts.  (Well, if we look at it that way, maybe not similar at all!)

In this passage the psalmist pleaded with the Lord to save him. He declared that he belonged to the Lord, that he was His. Then he reminded the Lord that he practiced, studied, followed—desired His precepts. He lamented that the wicked had been lying in wait to catch him so they could crush him. But still, he was determined to have confidence and lean on the testimonies of his Lord.

The earth was created in perfection. But the psalmist looks around and sees that the complete perfection God left man with was not visible; but he had faith that God’s commandments, His Laws,  were still wide enough to cover the whole earth. And, oh how he loved the Law of the Lord. He examined and deliberated on it all throughout his days, even the bad days.

What is the challenge in this scripture for those that follow Christ?  First, acknowledge the timelessness of God’s Word. It has never changed from the moment that He spoke our world into existence. I believe that the challenge for us could be in actively, and diligently making time to pursue spiritual growth, just as the psalmist did.  For us, this might include regular Bible study and prayer, along with meditating on the truths that have been revealed to us. If we make a sincere, concerted effort to understand God’s Word, it can’t help but seep over into our daily walk and help us live stronger more faithful lives.

How can we apply this passage? To strengthen our spiritual lives and our growth we should apply the Scriptures to our time (make time,) our consideration (be sincere,) and our attention (truly listen.) Don’t stop there. We should be obedient to what we learn, and make the effort to live out God’s precepts in our day to day lives. In addition, sharing our spiritual growth with others will, in return, come back to us as blessing and strength.

What does this mean to my faith? Knowing that God’s Word does not change strengthens the foundation of my faith, because God‘s word stretches from the beginning of time all throughout eternity.

Lord, thank You for Your never changing nature. I do not have to worry about how to approach You, for Your love for me will never change. I just need to come to You with a sincere and open heart and You will hear my petitions. I pray that You will continue to imprint Your statues upon my heart so that it will come out in my life, and that when others look at me they will see that I have served you faithfully.

94 I am thine, save me: for I have sought thy precepts. 95 The wicked have waited for me to destroy me: but I will consider thy testimonies. 96 I have seen an end of all perfection: but thy commandment is exceeding broad. 97 O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day.” Psalm 119:94-97 (KJV)
