This post’s passage reference: Psalm 119:90-93
I saw a post a few years ago that talked about how we should be praying scripture over our family every day. For many years I had already been sending my family members a good morning text with a Bible verse included. It started out, on my ancient flip phone, just sending them to the girls who were in junior high, high school and college. Little by little, the rest of the family was added. Then I had to add my Pastor and his wife, (had to add a smart phone,) and a few very close friends were added after that. I try to get a little bit of God’s Word sent their way to light up the dark of the day.
I believe it was about three years ago that I saw that post about making sure that you pray scripture over your family every day. What I started doing at that point was to take a Bible verse and turn that Bible verse into a prayer that I can pray over my family and friends. Since that time I have been sending them a prayer that comes from a Bible verse, essentially praying scripture over them each day.
Most of the time everyone gets the same prayer. If I know that someone is going through a hard time or they’re just going through something different in their life, I’ll find a scripture that I think will work better as a prayer for them. For the most part, people get the same prayer. It’s so interesting when people text me back and say that was just what they needed that day. Then somebody else will do the same thing. Throughout the day, I may have two or three people that are going through completely different things in life that have sent me a text and said that that prayer was just exactly what they needed that day.
Those are some of the times when I see how “alive” God’s Word really is. It is alive just as it was at the beginning of creation. I think that is something the psalmist saw in Psalm 119:90-93.
In verse 90, he looks around and sees how faithful God has been to him throughout his life. He knew that faithfulness would continue throughout future generations. After all, God created the earth and established it, and it has not changed. The psalmist shares that all God has established still remains according to His will. His certainty is that God’s creation will remain the same because, essentially, all of creation was created to serve God.
The psalmist realized that his love for, and delight in, God’s Law was what kept him going at some of his lowest points in his life, when without it to comfort him he felt that he may have perished. The psalmist was adamant that he would never forget God‘s precepts; because it was through those precepts that God had restored and revive his life
What can we find from this passage to challenge us in our Christian walk? The psalmist was all about his love for God’s Law—His precepts. The challenge for us could be to become so intimately connected to God’s Word (His precepts and His Law) that we develop a deep, unshakable love for it similar to the psalmist. We should challenge ourselves to delight in God’s Word with our heart and soul, yes, but also with our intelligence so that we develop more than a superficial relationship that doesn’t go very deep. We need to go deep and seek to attain the same kind of love that the psalmist possessed.
How can we apply this passage to our lives? We need to develop a way to pass along our love and our knowledge of God’s Word and His faithfulness to all those that we care about, our families, friends, co-workers (yes, don’t be afraid to share with your co-workers.) We need to make our best effort to memorize scripture so it is within us when we need it. I am really talking to myself here. I have a horrible time memorizing scripture. I can get the gist of the scripture, but I can’t always remember where it is. But I think as long as we are making the effort to get it written on our hearts, God will honor that effort in times when we really need it
What does this mean to my faith? My faith is strengthened when I see the creation that God spoke into existence is still “continuing on just as God intended; the earth and all creation are still fulfilling their purposes and God’s Truth is constant and unchangeable.” (Geneva Study Bible) God’s Word is still the same and my faith can grow stronger and stronger as I apply it to my life on a daily basis to help me face any challenges that may come my way.
I really liked this quote by H.B. Charles, Jr., from Standing on the Rock, referencing verse 91 of this passage: “I will never forget your precepts.” He says, “’Forget’ is not about mental recollection. It is a matter of the will more than the mind. To remember God’s word is to do it.”
Lord, thank You for Your faithfulness to all the generations before me and the faithfulness to come for future generations! What an amazing creation you have given us. It sometimes blows my mind when I see how intricately You have woven this universe together so that all things just work. Thank You for Your Word to guide me each day. Please allow me to discover more and more of Your riches as I seek to become more and more intimately connected to You through Your precepts. Allow me to continue to move closer and closer to You. Fan the flame of my desire for Your Word so it can light up the dark that may surround someone else.

“90 Thy faithfulness is unto all generations: thou hast established the earth, and it abideth. 91 They continue this day according to thine ordinances: for all are thy servants. 92 Unless thy law had been my delights, I should then have perished in mine affliction. 93 I will never forget thy precepts: for with them thou hast quickened me.” Psalm 119:90-93
“While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.” Genesis 8:22 (KJV)
“I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word. This [is] my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me.” Psalm 119:16,50 (KJV)
