Growing up did your mom ever give you the look? You know the one I’m talking about. You were probably misbehaving in some way. You were in a situation where she could not get to you to grab you by the ear, most likely a very public place. The best she could do at that moment was give you “the look”— sometimes known as the evil eye, stank eye, side eye, death glare, or just plain daggers. The not so hidden meaning was “Just wait till I get you home.”
Our parents probably did the best they could at instructing us on everything we needed to do, and trying to teach us in the way we should go. You could be certain that they had their eyes on you somehow, even those times when you knew they were not looking at you. It truly was like your mom had eyes in the back of her head. The second you made your move, there she was across the room, giving you the look.
Yes, most of us have had the look from our moms; but, have you ever behaved in a way that made God give you the look? I am certain that I have gotten the stank eye in my day. In Psalm 32:8, David tells us that God will instruct us on everything we need to do, teach us in the way we should go. He will follow up His instruction by keeping His eye on us to make sure His instructions are being followed.
The next verse (32:9) tells us that as God is teaching us, He is asking us not be stubborn, like a mule or horse that has to be controlled with a bit or bridle (so it doesn’t try to bite.) Oh my goodness, the times my stubbornness has probably drawn the look!
The challenge for us from these verses could be to allow ourselves to be teachable, to allow ourselves to listen and learn from the experience of others—our parents, teachers, pastors, bosses, co-workers, friends, and (and I will add) to make an attempt to listen more than we talk.
How can we apply this to our lives? We can apply it by seeking the counsel of God’s Word to be our main instructor. We can strive to become so close to God that we can tell when His eyes are on us, and we can pay attention and follow His guidance.
What does this mean to my faith? The knowledge that God’s eyes are on me gives me comfort. My faith is strengthened when I know that not only is He instructing me but He is also keeping His eyes on how well I am following His instruction. I am confident that He will watch over me and direct me toward the right path I should take.
Lord, I praise You that You teach me with Your Word. I am thankful that any decision I need to make can be made through searching Your Word. Help me concentrate on making sure that I listen to Your voice when I am writing, I don’t want me out there. I want to put what You want out there, to lift up and encourage others. You are generous in how You give me inspiration. I sincerely pray that You don’t have to give me the look!
