I was walking through the house today and did something silly. It was nothing to write home about, but just struck me as humorous. Then the next thought that hit me was. “And I did not make a song out of it.” There was no silly singing like I would have done a month ago. Actually, there has been no singing here in the house for the past month.
I have been sad over the past few weeks, but this just made me a little sadder. I have had the radio on. I am a radio girl. I like to turn my favorite praise song up full blast and sing (horribly) at the top of my voice. My momma loved it. I asked her once if she wanted me to stop singing. She said absolutely not because it gave me such joy.
Then again, I would make up the craziest songs all throughout the day and sing them to her. It could be anything from brushing her teeth to fixing lunch to emptying the garbage. Yes, I apparently thought our life was a musical and I was required to break into song on a regular basis.
I’m sure, eventually, the songs will come back… at least my praise songs at the top of my voice (well, in private anyhow.) I love the praise songs. I think God likes the praise songs too. They can bring me right to Him in worship and praise.
The Psalms are all about singing and praise and worship and telling stories from the heart. Psalm 95:1-3, is a call, a command even, to revere and praise our God. It begins by inviting everyone to come worship, to sing to the Lord! It is a call to sing a glad and thankful song of praise to the very foundation of our salvation—to our God!
It encourages us to gather together before our Lord and to let it be with a heart of reverent thanksgiving and joy. Honor Him with joyful praise and songs. These verses remind us that our Lord is a great God! He is Lord above all lords and King above gods! He is well worth praising!
The challenge for those following Christ could be to find the level of reverence that we need before we come into God’s presence to worship Him. We should never come to worship God without a certain level of reverence. John Trapp tells us in his Commentary on Psalms 95, “Let us anticipate His face, that is, prepare our hearts at home, before we come into the public;” … or, before we come into His presence for worship.
How can we apply this passage to our lives? It seems to me from this passage that we are, at the same time, invited and commanded to worship. God wants us to worship Him with honor and praise. First of all, come into His presence in a deliberately worshipful attitude, whether in private or corporate worship. Sing to God. Praise Him with your heart and your voice and your soul. He does not listen the same way we do. He will hear your heart. (I don’t think He minds “at the top of your voice” as long as it is coming from your heart.)
What does this mean to my Faith? My Faith is strengthened when I am reminded that God is the solid foundation of my Salvation. I am established on solid ground that will never be moved by trial or storm. Everything rests on Him. Knowing that He is the King (or ruler/commander) over all gods, over all–everything, gives me hope and courage.
Lord, God, I am in awe that You invite me to come into Your presence to praise You. I came to the realization with this post that I truly need to make sure when I come before You in worship, that it is with singing, joy, thanksgiving, praise, worship, reverence, and honor. I’m looking for some mending of my broken heart to be able to break out in song once again to praise You! Plus, a few silly songs back in sight wouldn’t be bad either!
