Yesterday was such an emotional day. For me personally, it is not enough that I am on an emotional rollercoaster right now due to my mom’s health situation and knowing she will not be with me much longer. I’m also dealing with a world that has gone mad. It has gotten so ugly. I was sorry yesterday evening that I picked up my phone. I’d had a beautiful, quiet day sitting here with my mom, listening to soft music or watching game shows.
The first thing I saw was that a beautiful young man, Charlie Kirk, 31 years old, was senselessly assassinated — a son, a husband, a father to two small children, a friend….even to the unfriendly. My first reaction was disbelief then shock then anger. Yes, the anger has lingered for a bit. Anger is not an emotion that I frequently feel, so I don’t always know how to handle it. I don’t know how to handle it at this moment. I should have stayed quiet. My knee jerk reaction was to, well, react.
The unchecked anger on my heart hung on for a long time last night. Honestly, it is still hanging on. It felt justified. I wanted to vent it somehow. So, feeling emotional, I posted on social media for anyone that supported this evil to just go away from me, and then changed my social media profile to a picture that said “enough is enough.” (I do truly believe this.) This was most likely a politically motivated assassination. The evil that could not beat him silenced him….or so they think.
I’m glad that in my distress last night, instead of sleep, I was searching God’s Word for some comfort. Then I slept on all of it. This morning I remembered this young man’s message. His life message was not mainly political, it was personal. Yes, he had a conservative political view. but his message to the youth of our nation was not hateful. It was telling others about the goodness of God and how living a Christ-centered life could change the world. He wanted to tell others about Jesus. He wanted to change the world through Jesus.
So first, today, I found a more appropriate profile picture – one that read, John 3:16. Once I did that, it got me to thinking about the fact that this young man spent his life in respectful dialogue with these people that I am so angry with and have no patience for. He wanted to show them a better way. He wanted to show them what true, authentic love looks like. He did not shun them or tell them to go away. He plopped himself down right in the middle of them and talked to them. He displayed what a civil discourse looked like. He did not argue. He did not answer in anger or sarcasm. He simply presented COMMON SENSE that was solidly backed by God’s Word.
When you think about it, isn’t that what Jesus did? He was continually plopping himself down in the middle of the crowd, teaching them truth and healing them. Jesus did not distance himself from the unfriendly crowds, he seemed to thrive there. Just as Charlie did.
What has this done for me? It has certainly put me in my place. It has lit a fire back under my desire to share Jesus. I have neglected my blog under the premise that I have been too busy and cannot take time to write a few words. If I truly feel called to share in the written word, no matter what, I need to try to make the time each day to write something, even if it is just a scripture and telling about Jesus’ sacrifice each day. It may not be funny or witty as I tend to write, but it will always end with the Gospel message….. The most important message in the world.
So, I am back and desire to stay! And that evil that thinks they silenced Charley Kirk, just managed to rise up many more that will carry on his mission.
