Our youth Sunday school class is going through John right now. As I was studying for our Sunday school lesson this week, I kept seeing comparisons with how the people were looking at John the Baptist and what they wanted from him and what they expected from him that matched how people look at us and how people expect us to behave and what they expect us to do for them and who they expect us to be from their perspective.
We are studying in John chapter 1 verses 19 through 34. I try to come up with a title for each section that we are studying. I tagged these verses as, “They Are Looking to See Who You Are.” The verse that stood out to me in this section was John 1:23. People had preconceived notions about John, and they were trying to get him to fulfil those notions. The verse reads, He said: “I am ‘The voice of one crying in the wilderness: “Make straight the way of the Lord'” (NKJV)
I see a challenge in this passage. John the Baptist was making a way in the wilderness for the first coming of Christ. Therefore, we, as Christians, should be making the way in the wilderness where we live for the second coming of Christ. They were looking for and anticipating the first coming of Christ. We should be looking for and anxiously anticipating the second coming of Christ.
People need to know about Jesus before he comes again. So, it is important how people look at you. What they should be seeing is Christ in you. The world needs, so badly, to see Christ in the people that proclaim His name. How you behave, how you present yourself to a lost and dying world makes a difference. As Christians, we should attempt to behave in a way that honors Christ. With that being said, people can have expectations of what they think you should do. We need to ensure that all of our actions reflect our faith and conform to our testimony. We need to be what Christ created us for and make every effort to accomplish His will.
We should challenge ourselves to become John the Baptist’s. We may not be someone important in this wilderness world we live in, but the Message we have to share is very important.

Do you know Christ? Do you know the peace that can come only from an intimate relationship with Him? You can know Him. Jesus Christ, God’s Son, born into human flesh, sinless, crucified and giving His life freely, buried, arisen on the third day, will come into your life and change the outcome of your eternity.
